Open Canoe Courses

“Push the Edge then Get Back In”

A fun look at open canoe safety and rescues skills and techniques on flat water. Play with your balance and edge, test your support strokes and then practice your rescues when you fall in!

Pre-Requisites: Some Open Canoeing experience would be beneficial.

“Straight and Smooth”

Make your paddling effortless and smooth with this session on flat water skills and efficient forwards paddling.

Pre-Requisites: Some Open Canoeing experience would be beneficial.

“Canoe Sailing”

Ever wanted to turn your Canoe into a sailing boat? This session will show you how to outfit, rig and control your canoe under sail, and wind permitting, take you on a journey down Llyn Tegid with hardly a paddle stroke.

Pre-Requisites: BCU 2 Star Open Canoe or equivalent would beneficial but not required.Bringing your own canoe would also help you to get the most out of this session.

‘Trad’ Skills

If you are new to Solo Open Canoeing then this is the session for you. Learn to how to turn, draw and pry your boat on your own. Learn how to use J-Strokes, Indian Strokes and change your trim for different conditions.

Pre-Requisites: Some Open Canoeing experience would be beneficial.

“Pre-Planning Your Moves on White Water”

Want to hit the top of every eddy? Want to place your boat exactly where you choose on every ferry? With this session you’ll learn techniques and tactics to make your white water paddling smooth and precise.

Pre-Requisites: Intermediate Paddlers will need to have some experience on Grade 2 White Water.

Advanced Paddlers will need to have had some experience on Grade 3 White Water.

“The Dark Arts of River Canoeing”

Open Canoeing is a discipline of witchcraft and sorcery, not least all that stuff you can do with poles! Learn how to pole, snub and line your canoe successfully up and down the river. Don’t forget your pointy hat!

Pre-Requisites: Paddlers will need to have some experience on Grade 2 White Water.
